CONCERT RE-view: Seattle Men's Chorus' Pride Concert was 'Memorable', but 'Lacked Balance'!

by MK Scott

Last Friday I attended the Opening Night of the Seattle Men's Chorus's annual Pride concert at Seattle's McCaw Hall and was thrilled it was an Audience choice theme from its 30 plus year history. I knew a few of my favorites would be on the list and was hoping they would be performed.
Now I should mention I am a little biased, being a former member of the group from 1999 to 2002, and was thrilled that 3 songs from my era were included, Armistead Maupin's 'Michael's Letter to Mama" (1999), 'Circle of Life' (2000), and 'Dancing Queen' (2002). it was also nice to hear the "Over the Rainbow" version that was on the chorus' first CD and remastered in 2000. it is was also nice to hear "Marry Us" by PDX GMC's Bob Seeley and "Livin' La Vida Loco" (2010). Captain Smartypants Performed a New Song, "For the Straight Guys", one of the funniest ever. The 2nd song, Davey Jones' locker was stupid and pointless. Where were the big hits from their 12 year history like "Vitamin Q" or "the Letter Song"? The Seattle Women's Chorus performed 2 numbers and one with the Men's chorus. Diverse Harmony performed "Joy to the world" and they are always a Joy. The chorus idol contest (2 women competed) was pointless as was the 5 song singalong (that is a staple of the Holiday concert) wasted in June. I wish they would have taken the time to perform more classics.
The Finale was "Dancing Queen" (2002) with the ABBA lookalikes (a few still from the 2002 ABBA concert), with confetti! A Great ending with nostalgia and flair.
