RuPaul’s Drag Race Season Five has finally arrived, with fourteen queens all fighting to be America’s Next Drag Super Star. And after watching the first episode, I think there’s a strong possibility we may see our first ever plus-size Drag Super Star crowned. But I’ll get to that in a minute.

As is the custom, the first episode opens with the ‘meet & greet’, and ‘controversy & drama’. This season’s big controversy is Alaska (29 - Pittsburgh, PA). Alaska is partners with Season Four winner, Sharon Needles. And in my opinion, Sharon Needles is the only reason she’s a contestant on Season Five. After watching Alaska through this first episode, I can see why the producers never chose her to be a contestant four seasons in a row. It’s no big secret that both Sharon and Alaska are recovering addicts. And it’s obvious that Alaska is heavily medicated. Lithium probably, maybe Xanax, but definitely something. Alaska’s entire demeanor is dry and muted, lacking that sparkle I see in every other girl on the show. Alaska is definitely this season’s ‘mercy’ contestant.

When you’re dating someone, it’s very important to always be on alert to determine if you and he are compatible for the potential for a long-term relationship. This screening process should be done before and throughout the pre-commitment phase of the relationship. By gauging your goodness-of-fit early on in your dating relationship, you’ll either be laying the foundation for a bond of trust and intimacy or you’ll be disengaging from further connection before becoming too emotionally invested. It’s critical to discover this information as early on in your dating as possible to avoid becoming overly-attached and developing expectations that would likely lead to disappointment and grief.

In determining your compatibility with a new guy you’re seeing, here are three categories of questions you might consider asking yourself to help along with your decision-making process.

Never talk to strangers. As children, this is one of the first life lessons repeatedly taught to us. It’s drilled into our developing minds by our mothers as they send us off to school. We’re educated on the subject of “stranger danger” by elementary school teachers, in hopes that they’ll see our innocent faces in class the next day. If a stranger invites you into his car, run. If a stranger tries to talk to you, ignore him. Don’t let him tempt you with candy or money. Find an adult immediately. We’re taught the worst possible scenario. Ultimately, we grow up learning that strangers are capable of any number of heinous acts. But what happens when the stranger becomes the hero of the story? How do we react when the person we’re taught to avoid has become our savior?

I wake up in a tangle of damp sheets. The dull, gray light of an overcast day peeks at me through the vertical blinds of a bedroom I’ve never seen. I quickly panic and sit bolt upright. It feels like a fog has invaded my brain, limiting any clear thought. I’m thirsty; my tongue is veritably sticking to the roof of my mouth. I observe my surroundings and discover a cherry wood dresser bureau, a matching computer desk, and nightstands on either side of the bed in which I sit. Nothing but standard bedroom furniture. I’m in my underwear, which has me continuously attempting to recollect the events of last night. I instantly begin scanning the floor to locate my t-shirt and jeans.

 "Life's a banquet and most poor sons of bitches are STARVING to death!" is Auntie Mame's most famous quote and her credo. Auntie Mame (one of my all time favorite films) is based on a bestselling book by Patrick Dennis, pseudonym Edward Everett "Pat" Tanner III. I just finished reading his biography, a very good one, UNCLE MAME.

Tanner was fun-loving and vastly entertaining (both in person and in print) married to a wonderful companion, Louise, and had two children. He essentially sheperded camp humor to the mainstream and was the first author to have 3 books on the bestseller list - at the same time.

Yet with the advent of 60s counterculture, what he did best - incisively skewer the snobbery of high society - quite suddenly was quaint and fell out of fashion. He attempted to become an arts dealer, and then - as he was a snob in his own right - found a final career as a butler. He excelled in this role, and ultimately butlered for Ray Kroc, owner of McDonalds, who never knew his clever and reliable servant was actually the famous former millionaire author of Auntie Mame.
